US based research firm Venture Development Corporation (VDC) published a report on the "Global Market for Wearable Computers" this week, predicting growth of more than 50% annually to 2006. As miniaturisation continues, networks become more reliable, and technology becomes more consumer friendly, East Asian and US consumers are already snapping up mobile phones that are so small that they can be worn as a fashion accessory. Mobile phone companies are now offering several models designed to be worn rather than pocketed or handbagged. However the wearable computer trend is far broader than voice or even data-enabled mobile phones. Under development in smart companies are a range of devices including functionality for geo-positioning, medical monitoring, and PDA applications. VDC analyst Tim Shea is on record as saying "The true potential for wearable computing in 2006 could be well over $1.3 billion (USD), if improvements are made in consumer-based products, including commercially viable 'smart fabric' technology..." If historical trends on take up of new technology and fashion adoption are any guide, expect Japan and South Korea consumers to be amongst the first to make the trend mainstream.
