While the up-market coffee shop trend is showing signs of stagnation in Europe, US and the more mature Asian economies of Hong Kong and Singapore, the new yuppies of Beijing are warming to the idea of paying more than 10 times the price of a street corner coffee for the privilege of consuming it in 'exclusive' trendy hangouts.

The world's coffee makers are taking notice and employing market research that seems to be telling them that China is the place to be.

According to the Kampala newspaper The Monitor, the new up-market coffee shops springing up for chuppies in Beijing provide a nice market for Ugandan coffee.

"...Ugandan coffee has entered China's huge market, selling fast in the shops and hotels of Beijing, the press attaché at the Chinese Embassy in Kampala, Li Bijian has said. Bijian said that there are four varieties of Uganda's coffee are selling in Beijing's hotels, shops and restaurants..."

"...The amount of coffee shipped to China since the year begun is half a tonne," he said. "[It was] to test the market... [but] the sales of these coffees are very good so far and demand is increasing..."

"...Bijian said that Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) has done market research in Beijing and come up with promising results..."
