Ford bullish in Indonesia

Asian Market Research News

February 17, 2002

AutoAsia Magazine reports that auto maker Ford is "strengthening" and "expanding" it's business in Indonesia. ..And this is despite generally very pessimistic views on the Indonesian economy, and Indonesia being a laggard in the very recent recovery of South East and East Asian economies. Also hanging over the Indonesian economy is the increasing threat of Islamic extremism and the international relations implications.

Given the broad economic picture, Ford's investment in Indonesia's future may be a surprise to many, but reflects some savvy medium to long term strategic planning.

Yet, once Indonesia can sort out their prolonged brawling and manouevering for political power, there are good medium and long term prospects for industrial and consumer marketers. Indonesia still remains a low cost base for regional and international manufacturers despite the political risk.

Extract: Ford has announced plans to strengthen and "significantly expand" its business in the Indonesian market through PT Ford Motor Indonesia (FMI).

This year FMI will introduce a number of new models and also develop a dealership network that, it is claimed, will "set to place it at the forefront of automotive retailing in Indonesia".
