While commercial market research owes much to academic theories of advertising (and the broader field of "communications"), when the term is used in the commercial context it usually refers to testing or developing a series of advertisements in given target consumer markets.

Data collection methodologies used can vary from observation to content analysis, depth interviews or focus groups, structured surveys, or longitudinal panels.
